I am on page 288 out of 485 in the book The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart. Sticky, Kate, Constance, and Reynie found out a lot about the school and something mysterious will happen soon.
The children are hoping to become messengers. Messengers get special privileges and also know more about the messages on the television. The messengers are usually the people with the best grades. This is a problem. Reynie and Sticky are doing very well on their tests, but Kate and Constance aren't doing well. The children decided that Constance and Kate should cheat. They plan to copy Reynie's and Sticky's paper. Pete will send her Morse code messages to Constance with the answers. It is important that they avoid being caught. If they are caught, there is no chance that they will become messengers.
Mr. Curtain told Reynie that he has what it takes to become a messenger! He also said Sticky may have what it takes to become a messenger too. Reynie reminds Mr. Curtain of himself when he was a kid. When Mr. Curtain is talking to Reynie, he says there will be no need for messengers after the mysterious thing to come. Why won't there be a need for messengers anymore? What is Mr. Curtain planning?
The children noticed that Mr. Curtain is always writing in a journal. What's in the journal? The children decided to find out. Reynie gave Mr. Curtain some bookmarks for his journal. While Mr. Curtain is putting in the bookmarks, the children read parts of the journal by looking through a kaleidoscope. They learn many things about the mysterious future event. They don't learn what the thing to come is!
The children notice that the gym is almost always locked! They see people come out. When the children ask the people how they got out while the door was locked, they say that it wasn't locked! The children decide to investigate. They get on top of each other to look through a window in the back. They see people inside practicing some sort of dance. What is it? The children guess that it must have something to do with the thing to come.
Sticky is caught cheating! The teacher sees him sending the Morse code messages and gets suspicious. He is sent to the waiting room! The children still haven't found out what the waiting room is. What will happen to Sticky!?
I predict that whatever Mr. Curtain is planning will happen soon. I think the people in the gym may be practicing for the thing to come. They are practicing a lot which may mean it's almost time. If so, then it must be getting very close.
A connection that I have is that sometimes I practice for something a lot. The people in the gym are practicing a lot. When I had my dance recital coming up, I practiced like crazy. I didn't want to mess up on stage. This may be why Mr. Curtain is having the people in the gym practice all of the time.
Why do some people, like Mr. Curtain, act nice one moment and mean at other moments? Mr. Curtain acts very nice around the children. If he is so nice, then why is he planning to do something mean? I think that people act like that because they can't make up their minds about the kind of person they want to be. They might want to be a nice person sometimes and then want to be mean at other times.
Another book that I have read is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The theme of this book is that sometimes things may not turn out as you expected. In this book, Harry and his friends are trying to find out what is turning people to stone. Harry thinks that Draco Malfoy is turning people into stone, but actually it isn't him. Things didn't turn out how Harry thought they would.
The Waiting Room is definitely very mysterious and creepy! I also really liked the part of the book where they figure out how to work together to raise their test scores!
